EXPOCHESS CHILDREN OF THE WORLD 2017
Thousands of children from 17 countries joined by chess

PRESS RELEASE

Eagerness, passion, amusement… these are some of feelings we experienced in the second edition of our pedagogical and solidarity project: EXPOCHESS CHILDREN OF THE WORLD. Children from 17 countries took part in this edition, 15 in the II International Drawing Contest and 9 in the II International Solidarity Chess Tournament. Thousands of children all over the world and many collaborators and organizers were united by a common goal: Show the world that we are equal no matter where we live. We understand Chess as a cultural bridge. If we have human connection the economical, ideological or idiomatic differences stay in the background and the best way to demonstrate it is with our future.

A global project in three phases

The third phase of the project EXPOCHESS CHILDREN OF THE WORLD 2017, the final of the festival, was held on December 16 in the Gran Hotel Lakua in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. The first phase took place in Budapest, inside the Global Chess festival were we presented the project and began the drawing contest. It continued in Cuernavaca, Mexico in the Festival Memorial Marcel Sisniega where we also presented the project and made an exhibition of the game system used in the tournament between the three headquarters (Hungary, Mexico and Spain): ASHI 4.0.

In Vitoria-Gasteiz we could experience the activities of the final phase of the festival which were divided in four parts:

The first part was held in the piano bar of the Gran Hotel Lakua where a live drawing contest took place and an award was prepared to be given to the winner. The International Solidarity Chess Tournament fused chess, online interviews between the participants of the 9 represented countries and an illustration and photography exposition carried out in Venezuela and Mexico for the festival. There were also a drawing workshop (with theme drawing templates from Mexico) and chess boards to keep enjoyment.

The second part was one of the biggest surprises of the festival: Beatriz Marinello, President for the FIDE Social Action Commission (World Chess Federation) give us an excellent video conference from her home in New York (USA) talking about her project in the international commission and her vision about the project EXPOCHESS. We also projected the Disney movie “Queen of Katwe” filmed in Uganda. Uganda was one of the countries participating in the festival and the real protagonist of the film, Robert Katente, their children and school took place directly in EXPOCHESS. Robert Katente sent us a video which was displayed before the movie, talking about his project with the children from Uganda. During the movie we took a small break to perform the award ceremony of the drawing contest. The winners representing Vitoria-Gasteiz were a girl and one boy from the school Carmelitas Sagrado Corazón (participants of the project EXPOCHESS).

In the third phase we started with the closing ceremony presenting the project EXPOCHESS since it origins in 2014. We played some videos of the artists of the exposition from Botswana, Chile, and Georgia … and followed with the award ceremony.

The award ceremony began with the prizes for the winners of the II International Children´s Drawing Contest. The contest was divided in two age ranges (from 6-9 and 10-14) and Nepal became winner in both categories. The prizes were two paintings of the exposition chosen by the Mexican artist Georgina Salazar. We continued with the winner of the live drawing contest, a 9-year child from Vitoria and finished with the winner of the II International Solidarity Chess Tournament. After showing a great level, Nepal was proclaimed champion followed by Portugal and Argentina. We finished the closing ceremony with many other surprises for the representative of Spain in the festival, the chess club Martintxo and for the receptionist of the Gran Hotel Lakua. But the most special surprise was prepared for Anabel de la Fuente, manager of the Gran Hotel Lakua. We thanked her the tireless social labor she has demonstrated all these years remembering the excellent festival she organized 10 years ago, La Liga de Campeones (Champion´s League) 2007. We displayed videos and messages from legends of chess who attended to that festival such as Karpov, Topalov, Judit Polgar, Ponomarinov and Leontxo García.

Personal thinking of the president and of EXPOCHESS and director of CHILDREN OF THE WORLD:

“The children have demonstrated once again that all the hard work has been worth it. All the eagerness we lived, adults and children, seeing how the children from different parts of the world were connected by chess, make us realize that we are all equal. The children are the future and if we are all together, we can build a better world.”
